Shopify sustainability apps have become a substantial category in their own right. Shopify currently lists 82 apps with carbon-offsetting features, covering everything from tree planting and customer donations to shipping emissions and carbon removal.
That growth reflects a wider change in ecommerce. Deloitte’s 2024 research found that 45% of UK consumers rely on businesses to offer sustainable products or services as standard, rather than expecting shoppers to make every environmental decision themselves. View the research.
The difficulty is that these apps do very different things.
Some ask customers to pay extra at checkout. Some plant a tree when you make a sale. Shopify Planet focuses on shipping emissions. Others fund carbon removal, remove plastic or support wider environmental projects.
We have worked with businesses and carbon projects since 2000, so we have compared the main Shopify sustainability apps on a slightly different basis: who pays, what the money actually funds, what evidence the merchant receives and what the shop can honestly tell customers afterwards.
One of the apps in this comparison is ours, and you should know that before you read on. We built Climate Counts because none of the existing apps did the job we thought mattered most.
When we looked at them, almost all started from the order: plant a tree per sale, fund a few grams of carbon removal per parcel, or ask the customer to add a donation at checkout. None let a business simply commit a fixed percentage of its own sales, then turn that money into high-integrity carbon credits from community-led nature projects we know, bought in whole tonnes and retired with a record the shop can point to.
So we built the app that does. For a Shopify merchant that wants to put a fixed percentage of its own sales into climate projects, our choice is Climate Counts. The other apps below are built for different jobs, and we explain which job each one does.

Ratings and pricing checked September 2026. Shopify listings change, so check the current app page before installing.
The prices above are not directly comparable. A tree, a kilogram of carbon removal and a carbon credit are different environmental products. We have therefore compared what each app actually funds rather than pretending the cheapest headline price is automatically the best value.
Which Shopify sustainability apps offer “carbon neutral” wording?
From 27 September 2026, EU law bans a shop from telling shoppers that a product or order is carbon neutral because the shop bought carbon credits. The rule comes from the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, and our guide to the EU ban on carbon neutral claims explains it.
The ban falls on the shop that shows the claim, not on the app that supplies it. So the question for a merchant is simple: does the app put that wording on your shop?
| Shopify sustainability app | What the app offers to say, in its own words | Offers wording the EU banned on 27 September 2026? |
|---|---|---|
| Climate Counts | “This shop puts a fixed amount from every eligible order towards Plan Vivo carbon credits” | No |
| Shopify Planet | “Offer carbon-neutral shipping on any order” | Yes |
| EcoCart | “carbon neutral order options for customers” | Yes |
| Greenspark | “offset carbon emissions” (listing); storefront wording not seen | Not seen |
| Ecologi | “1 tree funded per item purchased” | No |
| GoodAPI | “1 tree planted with each item purchased” | No |
| 1ClickImpact | “This order plants 2 trees, removes 1 lb of ocean plastic, and captures 1 lb of carbon” | No |
| One Tree Planted | “Plant a tree at checkout” | No |
Wording taken from each app’s Shopify listing, its own website, its help centre or its demo shop, checked 29 September 2026. Some apps let the merchant change the wording, so check what your own shop shows.
The ban matters only if your shop sells to shoppers in the EU. It does not stop you funding carbon credits, planting trees or supporting projects. It stops you saying that the purchase made the product carbon neutral.
1. Climate Counts: best Shopify sustainability app for funding climate action from sales
Best for: Shopify stores that want the business itself to put a fixed percentage of sales into climate projects.
We built Climate Counts because no app on this list worked this way. It starts with the amount the business wants to give, not with a tree or a kilogram per order.
You choose a percentage of eligible sales, for example 1%. If the store makes £100 of eligible sales, £1 goes into its Climate Counts balance. The merchant can also set a monthly cap.
If an eligible order is refunded before the funding cycle, the contribution is removed. Smaller balances roll forward until there is enough to buy a whole carbon credit.
We did not want to tell a merchant that every individual basket had somehow become “carbon neutral”. In the EU, that claim is now unlawful when it rests on offsets: see our guide to the EU ban on carbon neutral claims. We wanted a simpler model: decide what percentage of sales the business is prepared to commit, keep track of that amount accurately, then use it to buy and retire carbon credits.
C Level handles the carbon side. We have worked with carbon projects and businesses since 2000, including long-term work with community-led projects and Plan Vivo. The merchant therefore gets an ecommerce tool backed by an organisation that already works with carbon projects, credits, retirement and claims.
Climate Counts also uses the shop’s money, not the customer’s. Customers are not asked to add a donation at checkout.
For a merchant that wants to say, “we put 1% of eligible sales into climate projects”, that is the model we think is strongest.
Climate Counts is new. It launched in September 2026, so it does not have Shopify reviews yet.
Tree planting and shipping calculations are different jobs, covered by other apps below. If you want climate funding to come directly from the business’s own sales, Climate Counts is the closest fit.
Add Climate Counts to your store
2. Shopify Planet: best Shopify sustainability app for shipping emissions
Best for: merchants that specifically want to address shipping emissions inside Shopify.
Shopify Planet is Shopify’s own sustainability app. It focuses on shipping rather than a general company climate budget.
The merchant can pay for the climate action, the customer can pay, or both can contribute. Planet also includes badges, a live counter, landing pages and a donation widget.
Current pricing runs from $0 to $0.15 per order.
If your question is, “how do we deal with emissions from shipping Shopify orders?”, Planet is the obvious app to examine first.
Its merchant reviews are weaker than those of several competitors. Shopify currently shows a 3.3 rating from 76 reviews. Recent complaints include fraudulent low-value transactions using Planet’s contribution item and problems with storefront badges or reporting.
Those reviews tell us about the software experience, not whether the carbon-removal projects themselves are good or bad. I would treat them as a reason to test the app carefully before rolling it out widely.
Planet is built around shipping emissions. Climate Counts is built around a company-wide commitment from a percentage of sales.
3. Ecologi: best Shopify sustainability app for tree planting and carbon removal
Best for: merchants that want trees or carbon removal to be funded automatically when sales happen.
Ecologi is one of the more established Shopify sustainability apps. It is Built for Shopify and currently rated 4.7 from 36 reviews.
Its offer is easy to understand. Merchants can automatically plant trees or fund carbon removal, then display the results through storefront widgets, a virtual forest and customer impact emails.
Current pricing is $0.80 per tree and $0.28 per kilogram of carbon removal.
Ecologi is therefore a good fit if the environmental action itself is what you want to configure. You decide how many trees or kilograms of carbon removal should be linked to sales.
Climate Counts works the other way around. You decide how much of your revenue the business wants to commit, then that balance is used to buy high-integrity carbon credits from community-led projects.
Ecologi is built around units of impact per sale. Climate Counts is built around a percentage-of-sales commitment from the business.
Choose Ecologi if the store wants trees or carbon removal attached directly to each sale.
4. Greenspark: best Shopify sustainability app for multiple environmental causes
Best for: brands that want to support several kinds of environmental action from one Shopify app.
Greenspark is broader than Climate Counts, Planet or Ecologi.
Its Shopify app supports tree planting, plastic recovery, carbon action and other causes. Merchants can automate different actions and show customers the results through widgets, badges and a dashboard.
Greenspark currently holds a 5.0 rating. Its pay-as-you-grow pricing starts at $0.45 per tree, $0.08 per plastic bottle and $0.02 per kg CO2e. Higher plans reduce those impact prices and add features including API access.
This flexibility is the main reason to choose it.
A merchant can connect different products, sales or campaigns to different forms of environmental action rather than using one climate programme across the whole business.
That is a different job from the one Climate Counts does.
If the requirement is simply “put 1% of our sales into carbon projects”, Greenspark offers more moving parts than you need.
5. GoodAPI: best Shopify sustainability app for trees, plastic and donations
Best for: merchants that want strong customer-facing sustainability features across several causes.
GoodAPI currently has one of the strongest Shopify merchant records in this category. It is Built for Shopify and has a 5.0 rating with more than 220 reviews.
It supports tree planting, ocean-plastic removal and charitable donations. Its listing names partners including Veritree for tree planting and plastic removal.
The app also puts a lot of emphasis on communication. Merchants can display impact badges across product, cart, checkout and thank-you pages.
Current pricing starts with 50 trees and 100 bottles free. After that, the listed price is $0.43 per tree and $0.05 per bottle, with no monthly fee on the basic plan.
GoodAPI is a strong choice if you want the environmental programme to be highly visible to shoppers and you want more than one type of impact.
The point to keep clear is that these actions are different. A tree, a bottle of plastic removed and a charitable donation should not be rolled into one vague “impact” claim.
6. 1ClickImpact: best Shopify sustainability app for flexible campaign triggers
Best for: merchants that want a lot of control over when and how environmental contributions happen.
1ClickImpact offers one of the widest sets of triggers in this comparison. Contributions can happen per order, per product, monthly or by customer choice.
The app supports tree planting, ocean clean-up, carbon capture and charitable donations. It also offers impact certificates, public profiles, widgets and tracking.
Current pricing starts with 100 trees and 230 bottles free. After that, the Shopify listing shows $0.40 per tree, $0.026 per bottle, $0.40 per lb of carbon and $0.10 per $1 donated.
That makes 1ClickImpact useful for merchants running different sustainability campaigns across the store.
Its main limitation is maturity. At the time of writing, its Shopify listing still has no reviews.
That does not mean the app is poor. It means merchants have much less public evidence of day-to-day use than they do with GoodAPI, Greenspark or Ecologi.
7. One Tree Planted: best Shopify sustainability app for simple tree planting
Best for: stores that simply want to plant trees.
One Tree Planted’s app has a much narrower purpose than most of the apps above.
A customer can be asked to pay for a tree at checkout, the merchant can make the donation instead, or both can contribute. The money goes to One Tree Planted’s reforestation work.
The app is free and currently rated 4.7 from 18 reviews.
If the store’s aim is simply “plant a tree with every order”, that simplicity is useful. There is no need to turn tree planting into a complicated carbon-accounting claim.
A tree is not automatically a carbon credit, and there is no reason to describe it as one.
Choose One Tree Planted when reforestation itself is the thing you want customers to understand.
8. EcoCart: best Shopify sustainability app for shipping protection with climate impact
Best for: merchants that want climate action bundled into shipping protection and post-purchase tools.
EcoCart used to be discussed mainly as a carbon-offset app. Its current Shopify product is broader.
EcoCart Green Protection combines shipping protection, claims handling, customer rewards and climate impact. It also includes counters, banners, landing pages and sustainability metrics in the merchant portal.
The app currently has a 4.8 rating from 98 reviews. It is free to install, although EcoCart may bill external charges separately.
EcoCart makes sense if the merchant wants shipping protection anyway and likes the idea of sustainability being part of that same customer journey.
It is less suitable if the only requirement is to create a simple company-funded climate budget.
How to choose the best Shopify sustainability app
The fastest way to choose is to answer four questions.
What do you want the Shopify sustainability app to fund?
Do you want to fund carbon credits, carbon removal, tree planting, plastic removal or charitable causes?
Do not start with the app. Start with the environmental action.
If you want trees, Ecologi, GoodAPI and One Tree Planted are obvious candidates.
If you want shipping-related carbon removal, look at Planet.
If you want the business to put a percentage of sales into carbon projects, look at Climate Counts.
Who should pay for the Shopify sustainability programme?
Some apps let the customer pay extra at checkout. Others use the merchant’s own money.
If you want the business itself to make the commitment, choose a merchant-funded model.
That is one of the reasons we built Climate Counts around a percentage of the merchant’s sales rather than a customer donation.
What evidence does the Shopify sustainability app provide?
A badge is useful, but it is not evidence by itself.
For carbon credits, look for the project, the credit status and the retirement record.
For tree planting or plastic removal, look for the project, partner and tracking evidence.
The question is simple: if a customer asks what your sustainability badge actually means, can you show them?
What will the Shopify sustainability app really cost?
“Free to install” tells you almost nothing.
The real cost is:
software fee + environmental funding + any transaction or usage charge
That is why a tree at $0.43 should not be compared directly with a carbon credit at a completely different price. They are not the same product.
Why Climate Counts is different from other Shopify sustainability apps
Most Shopify sustainability apps begin with an environmental action.
Plant a tree. Remove a bottle of plastic. Fund a kilogram of carbon removal. Add a donation at checkout.
Climate Counts begins with the business’s budget. That is the gap we built it to fill.
You decide that, for example, 1% of eligible sales will go to climate action. Climate Counts records that amount automatically. Refunded eligible sales are removed. Smaller balances roll forward. When there is enough money to buy a whole carbon credit, C Level buys it from a community-led Plan Vivo project and retires it.
We think that works particularly well for four reasons.
First, the business pays. The customer is not asked to finance the programme.
Second, the cost is easy to understand. The merchant chooses the percentage and can set a monthly cap.
Third, the money buys high-integrity carbon credits from community-led projects. They are certified under Plan Vivo, a standard built around smallholder and community land projects, which requires at least 60% of the income from certificate sales to go back to the communities doing the work. They are bought in whole tonnes, so the app does not pretend that every individual basket has created a tiny standalone offset.
Fourth, C Level already works with carbon projects. Climate Counts was built by a carbon-project business, not by a software company that later added an environmental supplier.
Each app is built for a different job.
If you want one tree planted with every order, that is what Ecologi and One Tree Planted are built for.
If you specifically want to address shipping emissions, Planet is built around that problem.
If you want several environmental causes at once, that is the job Greenspark and GoodAPI are built for.
But if the aim is:
“We want to put a fixed percentage of our own sales into climate projects”
Climate Counts was built for exactly that job.

Shopify sustainability app FAQs
For merchants that want their business to fund climate projects from a percentage of sales, our choice is Climate Counts, which we built for that job because no existing app did it. Shopify Planet is built for shipping emissions, while Ecologi, Greenspark and GoodAPI are built around tree planting or broader environmental programmes.
There is no single answer because Shopify apps use very different carbon models.
Climate Counts uses a percentage of merchant sales to buy and retire high-integrity carbon credits from community-led Plan Vivo projects. Shopify Planet focuses on carbon removal for shipping. Ecologi lets merchants fund carbon removal by the kilogram.
Choose the model that matches what you actually want the business to fund.
Yes. Shopify Planet is Shopify’s own app for funding carbon removal associated with shipping. The merchant, customer or both can pay.
Yes. Ecologi, Greenspark, GoodAPI, 1ClickImpact and One Tree Planted all offer tree-planting options for Shopify merchants.
Yes. Shopify Planet and One Tree Planted both support customer-funded contributions, and several other apps offer customer contribution options depending on set-up.
Climate Counts uses the opposite model: the merchant funds the programme from its own eligible sales.
Costs vary because the apps fund different things.
Ecologi currently charges $0.80 per tree or $0.28 per kg of carbon removal. Greenspark’s pay-as-you-grow pricing starts at $0.45 per tree, $0.08 per plastic bottle and $0.02 per kg CO2e. Shopify Planet offers plans from $0 to $0.15 per order.
Climate Counts is free to install and the merchant chooses what percentage of eligible sales to commit.
Climate Counts sets aside a percentage of the merchant’s eligible sales and uses the accumulated balance to buy high-integrity carbon credits from community-led projects.
Shopify Planet is built around carbon removal for shipping emissions.
Choose Climate Counts if you want a company-funded climate budget based on revenue. Choose Planet if shipping emissions are the specific problem you want to address.
