Paskaia Mosquita

Paskaia is building a sustainable future with the indigenous Miskito people in La Mosquitia by protecting and restoring Honduras’ last significant primeval forest area.

Situated in the Northeastern part of Honduras, by the Caribbean Sea, La Mosquitia is home to the country’s last significant primeval forest. Centuries of logging and frequent fires have degraded vast areas of Caribbean pine forest into savanna lands where trees can no longer germinate, turning nature from a supportive force into a hostile environment for the local communities.

Restoring biodiversity and climate resilience

La Mosquitia, one of Central America’s poorest regions, is primarily inhabited by the indigenous Miskito people. The project aims to create sustainable livelihoods by supporting the natural and assisted restoration of degraded savannas and broadleaf plantations. Paskaia is creating employment within the communities through the fire brigade, protecting the communal area by extinguishing fires and building firebreaks.  The communities are also creating tree nurseries and planting out mahogany.

Project Type

Afforestation/Reforestation & Assisted Natural Regeneration

Key Species

jaguar, tapir, scarlet macaw, native broadleaf trees – Swietenia macrophylla (Mahogany), Cedrela odorata (Cedar)

How it works

The project has two programs. The first and most extensive is a savanna regeneration program primarily happening by controlling both fires and illegal logging in project restoration sites in Lainasta and Wamakklisinasta. The restoration sites are still in the preparation phase in Wamakklisinasta. Over 1500 hectares are being actively protected.

The second program is the reforestation of smallholder land parcels with broadleaf species in Truktsinasta and Lainasta.

The project is working with the Truktsinasta Territorial Council to develop more Plan Vivo agreements with smallholders.

What Makes This Project Special

Primeval Forests

Protecting and regeneration Honduras’ last significant primeval forests

Indigenous Misiko People

Creating new value and livelihoods with the Miskito people in La Mosquita

Rich Biodiversity

Safeguards exceptional biodiversity including jaguar, tapir, and scarlet macaw within a globally important wildlife corridor.

Livelihood creation

Providing long-term income to communities while supporting forest protection and regeneration.

Part of large rainforest system

Significant scaling opportunity at landscape scale, helping maintain ecological connectivity across a largely undisturbed rainforest system.

Project Challenges

  • Remote rainforest landscape with limited infrastructure, making monitoring, transport, and coordination difficult.

  • Ongoing pressure from illegal logging, cattle expansion, and land speculation threatening intact forest.

  • Indigenous communities face economic marginalisation with limited access to markets, services, and employment opportunities.

“I want to give my children the opportunity to study but I can’t afford it. In the future, the Mahogany we are growing could improve life for my children and grandchildren”
