These terms apply when you buy carbon credits from us through the contribution box on our articles and calculator pages. Please read them before you buy. By buying, you agree to them.
These terms are for people buying as individuals. If you are buying for a business or another organisation, please talk to us instead. The arrangements are different, and usually better for you.
1. Who you are buying from
C Level Earth Limited Registered in England and Wales, company number 04105851 Registered office: Innovation Centre, Falmer, Brighton, England, BN1 9SB VAT registration number 890003646
Telephone: +44 (0)1273 234666 Email: [email protected]
We call ourselves “we” and “us” below. You are “you”.
2. What you are buying
You are buying carbon credits from a Plan Vivo project. Plan Vivo is an independent standard that certifies community-led land and forest projects.
We already own these credits. We bought them before you did, and we hold them. You are not paying us to go and find some.
Before you pay, the contribution box tells you two things: which project your credits come from, and how many credits your money buys. Both appear on the page. If either is missing, do not buy, and please tell us.
Quantities are shown in kilograms or tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. They are rounded for display, so the words “about 317 kg” mean what they say.
3. The price, and the VAT
The price is £26.25 for one tonne of credits, before VAT.
VAT is charged at the UK standard rate of 20%. Voluntary carbon credits have been within the scope of VAT in the United Kingdom since 1 September 2024, so this is a standard-rated sale and not a donation.
The figure on the button is the total you pay. It already includes the VAT. If you press £10, we take £10 from your card — of which £8.33 is the credits and £1.67 is VAT.
We charge VAT at 20% to everyone, wherever you are. If you are buying from outside the United Kingdom and you believe that is wrong for you, email us and we will look at it.
4. How the sale is made
Choosing an amount is not an order. Nothing is agreed until:
- you complete the payment on the Stripe payment page, and
- that payment succeeds.
We take card payments through Stripe. You type your card details onto Stripe’s own page. Your card number never reaches us and we never store it. Stripe’s terms and privacy notice apply to that part of the transaction.
If your payment does not go through, no contract is made and you are not charged.
We may refuse an order. If we do, we will tell you and we will not charge you.
5. What happens next
Straight away. Stripe emails you a receipt for the payment.
Within one working day. We email you separately with the project, the quantity of credits and a reference for your purchase. Keep that reference. It is how we find your purchase again.
After 14 days. We retire your credits against the project on the Plan Vivo registry. “Retiring” means permanently marking them as used, so that nobody can ever use or sell them again. That is the point of buying them, and it cannot be undone.
Our retirements are public. If you would like the registry serial numbers for your credits, reply to our email with your reference and we will send them.
We do not issue a certificate for purchases made this way. If you need a certificate, please talk to us before you buy.
6. What this does — and what it does not do
Your money buys real credits from a real project, and the project genuinely happens. That is worth doing and we are glad you have done it.
It does not make the emissions from your journey disappear.
We want to be plain about this, because a lot of people are not. Buying these credits:
- does not cancel out, undo or reverse a flight, a journey or anything else you have done;
- does not make you, your journey or anything you own carbon neutral;
- does not make anything net zero;
- is not a licence to emit more.
The emissions still happened. The credits are a separate, additional good thing. Anyone who tells you the two cancel out is either confused or selling you something.
If you are a business and you need to make a public claim about your emissions, do not rely on a purchase made through this box. Talk to us — the rules for organisations are different and stricter, and we will tell you honestly what you can and cannot say.
7. Changing your mind
You have the right to cancel and get a full refund within 14 days, starting the day after your purchase. You do not have to give a reason.
To cancel, email [email protected] with your reference. You may use the wording “I cancel my purchase, reference [your reference]”. A clear statement in your own words is equally fine.
We refund the full amount, including the VAT, to the card you paid with. We do it within 14 days of you telling us, and usually much sooner. We do not charge a fee for cancelling.
This is why we wait 14 days before retiring your credits. Once a credit is retired it cannot be brought back, so we hold off until your cancellation period has ended.
If you would rather we retired your credits straight away, tell us and we will. If you ask for that, you give up the right to cancel, because we cannot undo it afterwards. We will confirm that back to you in writing before we do it.
8. If something goes wrong
Email [email protected] with your reference and tell us what has happened. We answer. We would much rather fix a problem than have you tell other people about it.
If we cannot sort it out between us, you can ask an independent dispute resolution service to look at it. Tell us if you want to do that and we will point you at one.
Nothing in these terms takes away your legal rights. If anything here conflicts with the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, the law wins and these terms give way.
9. Our responsibility to you
If we fail to meet these terms, we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking them. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable.
We do not limit or exclude our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Nothing in these terms tries to.
We supply these credits for private use. We are not responsible for lost profit, lost business or lost opportunity, because that is not what this is for.
10. What we do with your details
We take your email address from the payment page. Stripe asks you for it, because a payment needs one, and passes it to us. We use it to send you the details of what you bought. We have to do that — it is part of the sale, and we could not complete the sale without it.
The newsletter is separate, and it is your choice. There is a tick box beside the payment button. If you leave it ticked, we will also email you from time to time about our projects and our work.
- Every one of those emails has an unsubscribe link. One click is enough.
- You can also just reply and ask us to stop, and we will.
- Unticking the box means you only get the email about your purchase.
What we do not do. We do not sell your details. We do not pass them to anyone else for their own marketing. We do not build a profile of you or track you across other websites.
We keep records of your purchase for six years, because tax law requires us to.
Our full privacy notice explains the rest, including how to ask for a copy of what we hold and how to ask us to delete it.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top tells you when they last changed.
The terms that apply to your purchase are the ones on this page at the moment you bought. A later change never applies backwards to a purchase already made.
12. Which law applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can deal with any dispute.
If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own country’s courts.
